BY EDMOND ODOK – The sweeping waves of new helmsmen taking over at Federal Government Parastatals and agencies continued on Friday with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointing Shaakaa Chira as the substantive Auditor-General of the Federation (AuGF) as recommended by the Federal Civil Service Commission (FCSC).

According to the President’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Chief Ajuri Ngelale, the appointment was done in the exercise of the presidential powers vested in him by Section 86 of the 1999 Constitution as amended.

Ngelale said in a statement on Friday that President Tinubu approved Mr Chira’s appointment after the FCSC conducted a screening exercise that identified him as the most qualified candidate who had also scored the highest in the examination sat for by all eligible candidates for the office.

The Media aide said; “President Bola Tinubu expects the new Auditor-General to justify the confidence reposed in him and to live up to the high expectations that Nigerians have concerning the execution of the Renewed Hope Agenda of his administration.”

The appointment of Chira as the new Auditor-General comes days after media reports highlighted that the government’s failure to have in place a substantive AuGF has frustrated the country’s efforts at auditing Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs) of government.

Similarly, the reports drew attention to the fact that the vacuum has also largely hampered the public accounts operating system in both chambers of the National Assembly (NASS), especially as the AuGF’s reports that form the bulk of the relevant Committees’ work have not been filed for three successive years covering 2020, 2021, and 2022.

In another development, PresidentTinubu has also confirmed the appointment of Adewale Adeniyi as the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), according to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (SGF), Senator George Akume.

A statement signed by the Director of Information, Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation (OSGF), Mr Willie Bassey,, quoted Akume as saying; “The appointment takes effect from 19th October, 2023 and his tenure is in accordance with the extant provisions of the Public Service Rules (PSR)”.

This statement issued on Friday in Abuja said the president has tasked the new appointee to bring his wealth of experience to bear on his new assignment.

Meanwhile, the President has appointed Dr Muyi Aina to lead the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) as the new Executive Secretary and Chief Executive Officer (CEO), just as Dr Kelechi Ohiri becomes the new Director-General and Chief Executive Officer (CEO) at National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA)
