BY EDMOND ODOK – President Bola Tinubu has appointed the son of Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and ex-Kano State Governor, Engineer Umar Abdullahi Umar, as the Executive Director, Technical Services of the Rural Electrification Agency (REA).

Umar is now in the new REA management team following the indefinite suspension slammed on the immediate past team that was led by embattled Ahmad Salihijo.

With the President approving the appointment of Aliyu Abubakar to replace Salihijo, three others, including Ganduje’s son will be serving as new Executive Directors of the Agency. On the list are Ayoade Gboyega — Executive Director, Corporate Services; Doris Uboh — Executive Director, Rural Electrification Fund (REF); and Abdullahi Umar, the Executive Director, Technical Services

The REA’s new Technical Director was actively involved in the 2023 general elections. However, following his father’s decision to pull out of the Senate race, he took a plunge into the political arena with an eye on the House of Representatives seat.

Despite capturing the APC ticket for the Dawakin Tofa/Tofa /Rimin Gado constituency, Engineer Umar was unable to unseat Hon Tijjani Jobe, a ranking lawmaker and member of the opposition New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP)

Noted to have played an active key role in the Tinubu/Shettima campaign team, especially in the youth wing, Engr Umar, described by many as being very close to his father, had formerly worked with the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
