- Midfield maestro pockets retro ‘Superior Player’ Award
BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI – Nigerian football icon, Austin Jay-Jay Okocha has been officially presented with a special retroactive FIFA ‘Superior Player’ of the Match Award for his outstanding showing in Nigeria’s historic victory over Spain at the 1998 FIFA World Cup
The honour recognizes his dazzling midfield masterclass and record-breaking dribbling during the Super Eagles’ memorable 3-2 upset over one of the tournament favourites, Spain on June 13, 1998, during their opening Group D encounter in Nantes, France
Playing a pivotal role in that action packed match, Okocha’s dazzling skills, creativity, and leadership in midfield were instrumental in helping Nigeria secure one of the most famous victories in the nation’s football history. The recognition from FIFA celebrates Okocha’s exceptional display in a match that remains one of Nigeria’s greatest moments on the global stage.

The former Super Eagles captain was at the heart of Nigeria’s impressive comeback after Spain had taken the lead, with the African giants eventually claiming all three points through goals scored by Mutiu Adepoju (26th minute), Garba Lawal (74th minute), and Sunday Oliseh (79th minute).
Widely recognized among one of the biggest upsets in World Cup history, the famous comeback victory over La Roja further cemented Okocha’s status as one of Africa’s finest football talents.
Described by many pundits as the unstoppable Nigerian football royalty, this electrifying latest honour highlights Jay-Jay’s enduring legacy, proving once again that his magical flair and immense contributions to Nigerian and African football remain unmatched on the global stage.
Beyond his celebrated exploits with the Super Eagles, the midfield maestro orchestrated an unforgettable European club career. His audacious flair and smooth dribbling illuminated the pitch from Germany’s Bundesliga to Turkey’s Super Lig, before dazzling fans in France’s Ligue 1 and also etching his name into English Premier League folklore, earning admiration from teammates, opponents and supporters alike
His dazzling footwork, unwavering confidence, composure, and technical wizardry not only defined his era but solidified his status as a premier global ambassador for Nigerian Football. Also, by pulling off audacious plays under intense pressure, he became a profound inspiration, empowering countless young African athletes to dream of shining on the sport’s grandest stages.
Additionally, the monumental influence of his legacy spans far beyond trophies, representing a cultural shift in how African talent is perceived globally. Fusing charismatic flair with unmatched composure, he shattered long-standing barriers and elevated the standard of play within the Super Eagles.
His ability to command a match with both grace and explosive creativity changed the international narrative, ultimately laying the foundation for the next wave of international soccer stars who continue to dominate the modern game.
On the world stage, Okocha played in three FIFA World Cups (1994, 1998, and 2002). While this commemorative award specifically honours his dazzling performance against Spain, Okocha also holds another major, ongoing FIFA record for famously completing the most successful dribbles (15) in a single FIFA World Cup match during Nigeria’s 1994 tournament clash against Italy.
Going down memory lane, that incredible match featured one of the most iconic strikes in World Cup history, as well as an intense, thrilling back-and-forth contest. In the 26th minute, Adepoju headed in an equalizer from a corner shortly after Spain took the lead through Fernando Hierro in the 21st minute.
After Raúl put Spain up 2-1 in the 47th minute, winger Garba Lawal restored parity for the Super Eagles in the 74th minute following what was considered an own-goal by Spanish goalkeeper, Andoni Zubizarreta. The legendary goal-tender had inadvertently let Lawal’s seeming harmless cross slipped through his legs into the net in an embarrassing fashion.
Then came the defining moment as Skipper Sunday Oliseh’s legendary, long-range thunderbolt in the 79th minute sealed victory for the Super Eagles as they overcame the Spaniards in an electrifying fashion. – With agency reports
