Why I Suspended, Ordered Emefiele’s Detention – President Tinubu
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has given reasons why he suspended the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mr. Godwin Emefiele and ordered his detention to allow for investigation.
President Tinubu, who gave the reasons on Friday at a town hall meeting with Nigerians in Paris, France organized on the sidelines of his visit to Paris, France for the New Global Financing Pact Summit, said that the Nigeria’s financial system under the leadership of Emefiele as Governor of the CBN was rotten, adding that many Nigerians outside the country were put in difficult straits remitting funds through the banking sector.
In the words of Tinubu; “The financial system was rotten. Few people were making bags of money and then those of you outside Nigeria stopped sending money home to our poor parents. Several windows… but that is gone now, is gone.
“The man is in the hands of authorities, something is being done about that. They will sort themselves out,” he said.
The President suspended Emefiele as Governor of the CBN and directed a probe of his tenure following which the personnel of the Department of State Services (DSS), trailed him to Lagos, arrested him and flew him to Abuja. Since his arrest and detention by the DSS, the embattled CBN boss has remained incommunicado.
