A late-night tragedy in a quiet Damaturu estate in Yobe State, North East Nigeria has culminated in a ultimate sentence of death by hanging for a 45-year-old husband,
The Yobe State High Court delivered a definitive verdict against Abubakar, widely known as “Daddy,” finding him guilty of the murder of his wife, Ammi Adamu Mamman.
The momentous ruling has finally brought to an end nearly three-years’ judicial saga that began with an investigation into the incident at the couple’s own residence.
The event unfolded in the pre-dawn hours of January 4, 2024, inside the couple’s home at the New Bra-Bra Housing Estate and according to police accounts from the Yobe State Police Command, a distress call at 4:48 a.m. led operatives to the scene where 42-year-old Ammi Adamu Mamman had sustained a fatal neck injury while in bed.
While Musa claimed to investigators that an unknown intruder had broken into their room and attacked his wife, The suspect reportedly told the police that he heard his wife shouting and, upon waking up, discovered that she had sustained a stab wound to her neck and was bleeding heavily.
The police account further stated that he claimed to have seen a man holding a knife and that, when he confronted the suspect, two other persons allegedly came to the man’s aid and helped him escape.
However, after hearing the case, the Chief Judge of the Yobe State High Court No. 1, Justice G.K. Kaigama, systematically dismantled his defense. In rejecting his plea of innocence, the Chief Judge ruled that the prosecution had proved its case of culpable homicide beyond a shadow of a doubt, sealing Musa’s fate to the gallows.
The Court delivered the judgment on Wednesday, following the testimonies of eight prosecution witnesses that weighed so much against the suspect.
In his defence, Musa, through his lawyers, maintained that other persons had killed his wife after breaking into their home. Meanwhile, the judge said the convict has the right to appeal the judgment within the stipulated 30-day period, in accordance with the applicable law.
