BY AUSTIN AYAJI, YOLA – For its inability to secure the lives and property of Nigerians, President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration has failed woefully in all aspects of governance rating.

This is the submission by Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state who insists that any government that cannot protect its citizens is a pathetic failure and has no business with governance.

Governor Wike, who was at Government House in Jalingo, the Taraba state capital to interface with delegates and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s stakeholders, said in the shoes of President Buhari, he would have long resigned for failing to address the country’s mounting security challenges.

“If I were President Buhari, I would have addressed Nigerians that I’ve tried my best but my best isn’t good enough, therefore I’m resigning. Any government that cannot protect the lives and properties of its citizens has no business in government. It is unfortunate that no part of Nigeria is secure today.

“Each time there’s a bomb blast or killing, you will hear breaking news that Buhari is meeting with Service Chiefs. That is wrong. The breaking news Nigerians want to hear is that bandits have been eliminated. Buhari should lead from the front by being the Service Chiefs himself”, the Rivers state Chief executive said.

According to him, Nigeria needs a committed leader that is truthful and capable of bringing the desired change Nigerians yearn for, stressing that the importance of state policing in the fight against insecurity cannot be over-emphasised.

He said; ”State Police is imperative to tackling insecurity. It is very key. It is only those who understand the terrain of a place that can effectively police the area. Besides, it will bring job opportunities to our teeming youths.”

Governor Wike assured the PDP delegates that if he is given the party’s presidential ticket, they can go home to sleep soundly, knowing that given the opportunity to administer Nigeria as President, he has all it takes to tackle insecurity headlong and ensure the security of all Nigerians.

In his remarks, host Governor Darius Ishaku of Taraba State said the institutionalisation of State police is long overdue and must be urgently considered by all well-meaning Nigerians among the best ways to secure the country while protecting the lives and property of all citizens.

Governor Ishaku expressed surprise at the lukewarmness demonstrated by the National Assembly towards State Policing given its importance in the fight against insecurity.

On the forthcoming PDP primaries, the Governor urged all delegates to vote wisely for candidates with the capacity to deliver dividends of democracy to the people.
