Yusuf Buhari, son of the former President Muhammadu Buhari, has described his resounding landslide triumph in Saturday’s fiercely contested All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives primary as a definitive statement made for the constituents.

With the high-stakes victory, Yusuf firmly secured the ruling party’s ticket in the coveted Daura/Sandamu/Mai’adua Federal Constituency in Katsina State.

Interestingly, while the exercise was still ongoing, Yusuf had tweeted: “Alhamdulillah! We have secured a landslide victory with 5,849 votes, defeating our opponent who polled just 21 votes. This overwhelming mandate is a clear demonstration of the trust, confidence and support of our people. Thank you to everyone who stood with us, prayed and voted for this victory. Mun gode kwarai”.

Arising from a decisive ballot count, Lawan Garba, Chairman of the constituency’s APC primary election committee, announced that Yusuf Buhari secured a landslide victory with 17,342 votes, overwhelmingly defeating Auwalu Musa Daura, who recorded a meager 480 votes in the primary election.

Auwalu, who is the son of former Director-General of the Department of State Services (DSS), Lawan Daura, had defied intense pressure to step down for Yusuf Buhari, stubbornly resisting last-minute efforts to forge a consensus agreement for the party’s ticket

As expected, Daura, who rejected the exercise’s outcome, told reporters that the process did not comply with the established guidelines of the APC, claiming also that many of the participants were not registered APC members.

However, speaking in an interview with DCL Hausa shortly after the exercise, Yusuf Buhari described the conduct of the primary election as peaceful, maintaining that anyone not satisfied with the outcome was free to seek redress within the party’s official structure.

Further expressing confidence that he would emerge victorious in the 2027 general elections, Yusuf said: “I thank Allah and will continue to appreciate the good people of Daura/Sandamu/Mai’Adua for coming out to vote for me. I will focus on carrying everyone along, including those who contested with me, so that we can work together for development. It is a youth movement, and we will ensure young people are fully involved.

“God is great. We (I and Auwalu) met at the polling unit, exchanged greetings and even took photographs together, so I do not understand what he is talking about. If he wishes, he can take the matter anywhere he wants.

“As far as we are concerned, the election was peaceful and there will be no crisis. I urge the people of Daura/Sandamu/Mai’Adua to come out en masse to exercise their franchise and, God willing, we will win the election
