BY AMOS DUNIA, ABUJA – The Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Mr. Ibrahim Magu on Wednesday said the anti-graft agency remain unwavering in its determination to carry out a thorough investigation into sources of election campaign funding ahead of the 2019 general elections.
Magu, who stated this at an interactive session with media chiefs at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja, said the Nigerian people have more to gain in the process of strengthening the electoral process through effective monitoring of the financing of elections.
The EFCC boss said such monitoring would go a long way to help improve good governance as well as ensure that credible and good candidates are elected and not money bags.
Magu also urged to Nigerians to give the EFCC two weeks within which it would conclude the serious matter of corruption in the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
This is just as he said that the EFCC did not delegate its investigation responsibilities to the ministry of Sports to carry out, stressing that there is no organisation that is as equipped and having the needed knowledge to conduct the investigation required to unearth the criminal content of the petitions with regards to that of the NFF.
Magu said the progress the EFCC has made thus far include recoveries of monies stolen from military budgets, corruption in the judiciary, arrests of those hitherto considered as untouchables.
The EFCC boss said that as part of the efforts to increase its tempo of activities, the commission is collaborating with the Federal Inland Revenue (FIRS) and the Asset Management Corporation of Nigeria (AMCON) to investigate and recover funds and properties within the provisions of the laws.
Magu further said; “Nobody is above the law. Nobody will be spared. We shall let the nation know our findings. We shall deliver quality investigation on every case.
“We gather intelligence and information on all corruption matter. Some people are refunding some of the monies they have stolen. We have the information. We have the records. Nobody comes here who is guilty goes away free.
“The list of the looters in the nation is being documented and we shall soon publish and the guilty ones will face the wrath of the law.
“For us, there is no end to the strategies of fighting corruption. Every Nigerian has a duty to fight corruption. Exposing corruption anywhere is a strategy in fighting corruption. Every journalist is a corruption hunter. We must all fight this gnome in the interest of our nation.”
