2023 C-River Guber Polls: Labour Party Backs APC On Power Rotation
- Slams PDP for betrayal, selfish agenda
BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – With electoral campaigns taking the centre stage of political activities nationwide, the Labour Party (LP) in Cross River State has thrown its weight behind the All Progressives Congress (APC) in support of power rotation to the Southern senatorial district of the State.
The Party said its position is based on the spirit of fairness and equity as well as the need to continuously promote trust among the various ethnic groups across the State.
Addressing a press conference in Calabar, the Labour Party State Chairman cum Governorship flag bearer, Mr Ogar Osim, and Senatorial candidate for the South Senatorial District, Rt Hon Ntufam Daniel Asukwo, jointly affirmed their unbending support that power returns to the southern part of the state after 16 years of governance
Rt Hon Asukwo, popularly known as Dansuki, said though his Party’s governorship candidate hails from Ikom Local Government Area in the Central Senatorial District, there can be no hiding of his support for power rotation for fairness and justice.
Ntufam Daniel Asukwo, who announced the LP’s State-wide campaign flag-off for next year’s elections, reaffirmed that politics of inclusiveness and fair play would benefit the Cross River more rather than the promotion of selfish ambition and pecuniary interest by individual politicians.
According to him, there is no justifiable reason why the Southern Senatorial zone should be deprived of the governorship position after 16 years of political power traversing the entire three senatorial districts in the state.
On the court ruling stopping his senatorial ambition on grounds of electoral law infraction, Hon Asukwo said though the Courts have a duty to perform when matters are brought before them, it is also incumbent on him to exercise his constitutional right of approaching a higher court for appropriate adjudication
Aligning with Ntufam Asukwo on the power rotation project, the LP State Chairman, who doubles as the Party’s gubernatorial standard bearer, Mr Ogar Osim said despite being from Ikom Local Government Area in the central senatorial District by birth, his residential status in Calabar South Local Government qualifies him to seek the office of governor having lived in the area for over 31 years.
Taking the People Democratic Party (PDP) to the cleaners for fielding a governorship candidate from the Central Senatorial District, the LP Chieftains described it as a selfish attempt to scuttle the existing power rotation policy in the state irrespective of party affiliation.
They warned that anything that makes power shift to the Southern part of the State impossible would amount to a betrayal of trust.
