- Applaud Yahaya Bello’s presidential ambition
BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – State Houses of Assembly lawmakers in the North-East geopolitical zone have thrown their weight behind candidates in the North Central zone ready to vie for the country’s presidency come 2023.
The legislators from the six states in the geopolitical zone elected on the All Progressives Congress (APC) ‘s platform, said the agreement has become necessary because the presidency remains the only position yet to be occupied by the zone since Nigeria gained independence in 1960.
The declaration was contained in a communique issued at the end of an extraordinary meeting held in Bauchi to chart the way forward on the 2023 general elections.
Signed by the Speaker of Bauchi State House of Assembly, Abubakar Y Suleiman, the communique also conveyed the State Assembly Legislators’ vote of confidence in President Muhammadu Buhari for his sterling and cohesive leadership of Nigeria amid debilitating security and economic challenges.
The zone’s lawmakers, who urged the President to remain focused and relentless in ensuring that he leaves Nigeria better in 2023, also pass a vote of confidence on the Governor Mai Mala Buni-led Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee for positively and aggressively repositioning the APC as a truly national party.
They also appreciated the Committee for its purposeful leadership that continues to attract men and women of goodwill into the party, just as they urged the Committee to do more ahead of the National Convention slated for Saturday, February 26, 2022.
To further drive home their position, the communique stated thus; “State Assembly Legislators of the North East Zone ENDORSED and STATE their unalloyed and unshaken support for the aspiration of the young and ebullient Governor of Kogi State, Governor Yahaya Adoza Bello, who has against all odds decided to take the bull by the horn, by aspiring to the Office of the President of Nigeria come 2023”.
According to the group, Governor Bello deserves commendation for leading the charge and heeding the clarion call to have Nigeria’s Presidency from the North Central Zone, urging him to stay focused on his ambition of occupying the number office as members of the North East Zone are solidly behind him.
Furthermore, the lawmakers also agreed to engage the APC national leadership on the need to zone the Party’s presidential ticket to the North, saying their position stems from the fact that; “The North will rule for 10 years at the end of President Buhari’s tenure, while the South would have ruled for 14 years”.
