BY ONYEKACHUKWU IBEZIM – Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State has slammed former Vice President Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, over comments that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s presidential ticket will always be there for his taking at any time.

However, the governor warned that such presumptuous comments clearly indicate the PDP presidential candidate in the 2019 general election is taking party’s delegates for granted, maintaining Nigerians will receive rude shock with the PDP presidential primary results when the time comes.

He also said in Port Harcourt on Sunday that any of the aspirants who emerges from a fair and transparent process would have the entire party structures rallying around him and ensuring victory in the 2023 presidential election.

Reacting to the Wazirin Adamawa’s comments that he would easily pocket the PDP’s ticket, Governor Wike said no one should take the PDP convention delegates for granted, adding; “I didn’t expect him frankly speaking to say that he will always clinch the ticket of the party.”

Speaking through Kelvin Ebiri, his Special Assistant on Media, the Rivers State Chief Executive further said: “That is going too far and taking the delegates for granted”, even as he urged PDP members to resist making divisive utterances ahead of the 2023 elections

Expressing commitment to champion any cause that will ensure PDP returns to power in 2023, and once again resumes the process of rebuilding the nation after years of All Progressives Congress (APC) poor governance, the governor hinted thus; “People should watch, there will be a shock as far as PDP convention is concerned.

“People should watch what is going to happen. People like to underrate so many persons and it is not good in politics.”

On the Independent National Electoral Committee (INEC)’s timetable released at the weekend, Governor Wike said PDP’s National Executive Committee (NWC) will ensure the party conforms to the schedule, saying; “We are a law-abiding party.

“The party will soon meet, the NEC will meet and find the way forward on how we will put our house in order and make sure we religiously follow the timetable of INEC without violating any provision of the law and guidelines that INEC may have produced.”

Commenting on recent developments in the polity as a good omen for the nation’s main opposition party, Governor Wike lauded PDP leadership in Plateau, Cross River and Ondo State for the sterling performance of the party in Saturday’s bye-election.

Specifically, he ascribed PDP’s victory in the Jos North/Bassa federal constituency in Plateau State to the recent decision by the former Plateau State Governor, Jonah Jang, and former Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Senator Jeremiah Useni to reconcile their differences and work for the party’s overall interest.

PDP’s impressive performance in winning the Akpabuyo State Constituency bye-election in Cross River State also drew applause from Governor Wike who noted that the victory was recorded despite hostilities and violence unleashed by the Governor Ben Ayade-led APC administration in the State.
