- As LP targets 70% votes nationwide
BY SALISU FAROUK – With the opposition parties getting tired of repeating their taunts of no structures for the Labour Party (LP)’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, the Party on Monday stormed Kebbi State to woo voters and further promote the Obi/Datti joint ticket for the 2023 general elections.
At a Town Hall meeting held in Birnin Kebbi, the Kebbi state capital, the Obi/Datti campaign movement attracted a huge gathering of followers across tribes and religions with the National Secretary of LP, Umar Faruk Ibrahim in attendance.
Others that grace the meeting included officials of Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Kebbi state Council; and Youth Movements for Obi as well as all candidates of the Labour Party and their executives.
Addressing the Town Hall meeting, the chief host and NLC Chairman, Kebbi State Council, Comrade Umar Halidu Alhassan said the Labour Party has come to rescue Nigerians from the current poor state of the nation, stressing that LP is the creation of NLC.
He said given the fact that LP belongs to the Organised Labour, it does not know religion and tribe, assuring the Party’s National Leaders the Kebbi State Council is fully behind the Obi/Datti movement in the North West state.
Also speaking at the event, National Secretary of LP, Umar Faruk Ibrahim said the team was in the State to sensitise the people on the need for them to vote for the right candidates, stressing that current happenings in the country know no religion or tribe “so people should close ranks and vote the right persons not minding his religion or tribe”.
“We are happy with the reception received in Kebbi and it shows Labour Party is alive in Kebbi, we saw Igbos, Hausas, Yorubas and other tribes present here which gives us hope of a better Nigeria come 2023”, he said
On what the Labour Party presidency would do differently, Ibrahim said the Obi-led administration will, first of all, work on stabilising the country and ensuring there is a responsible government in place for all Nigerians devoid of nepotism
According to the LP National scribe, with a leadership that is responsible and has the interest of Nigerians at heart, every other thing will take proper shape, including the economy and security, just as all other sectors in the country will enjoy a breath of fresh air.
For him, of the 89 million votes expected, LP is focused on polling between 70 percent and 80 percent to achieve victory, adding; “We need a country where all citizens will sleep with their eyes closed, feeling secured and protected; a country where every child will go to school, rich or poor families.”
