BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the drums are already rolling out to endorse the Cross River State Governor, Prince Bassey Edet Otu for second term in office.

The latest drums beats are coming from the Southern Senatorial caucus of the Cross River State House of Assembly (CRHA) that claims the governor is deserving of another term based on his good works so far.

According to the Caucus Leader, Rt Hon Francis Bassey, who also doubles as the State Assembly’s Majority Leader, their decision to endorse Governor Otu for a second tenure by a unanimous vote of confidence was based on convincing and verifiable track record of achievements within a short period of less than two years

Bassey representing Odukpani Local Government Area state constituency in the Assembly, further said their move is a warning signal to those nursing gubernatorial ambitions in 2027.

He said such ambitious individuals are advised to backtrack and put their aspirations on hold because Cross River State is not ready for such unnecessary political distractions

Listing the achievements that have endeared Governor Otu to their heart and are feasible for residents of the State to behold, the Assemblyman said these include the acquisition of 50 hectares of farmland in Ogoja local government area and another 12 hectares in the southern senatorial district of the state for rice cultivation, a move described as a panacea for food security in the State.

Others are the enrollment of over 50 youths with Skyline Technology limited located at the export free zone in the state for skill acquisition in electrical and electronic hardware production as well as the ongoing Urban Renewal program that has restored the past glory of Calabar, the State capital as a clean and green tourism destination in the country.

Addressing the media in Calabar, the Lawmaker, accompanied by other Southern Senatorial District Caucus members of the assembly, urged journalists to undertake an independent fact check of Governor Otu’s achievements.

He said such disposition would put the media on a good stead to partner with the current State administration on robust dispensation of information and enlightenment of the public to clear doubts about the ‘People’s First’ mandate and the development strides of the administration.

He maintained that the governor’s people oriented style of governance is commendable and should be supported in the overall interest of the State and its peace-loving residents.

The Caucus Leader also pointed out that revamping the State airline with new flights and the proposed railway lines are landmark achievements of this administration.
Additionally, he said; “The state has also flagged off the UNESCO Oban Biosphere Reserve Project, recognising Cross River’s commitment to environmental conservation, and sponsored many youths for an internship programme in electrical and electronics at Skyrun, training many others in different areas of skill acquisition.
“This administration has ensured that thousands of vulnerable youths receive N10,000 monthly stipends under the Labor Intensive Public Workforce of the NG-CARES programme. It has also strengthened security through collaborations with security agencies and community policing initiatives, ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state”.

Also, responding to reporters’ question, the Caucus Leader debunked insinuations in social media circles that the Senator representing the Southern Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong is warming up to give the governor a fight for the 2027 governorship ticket of the All progressive Congress (APC)
