Adamu Is New CBN Deputy Gov

President Muhammadu Buhari has nominated Mr Edward Lametek Adamu as the new Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).

Until his recent elevation, Adamu was a Director of Human Resources at the Nigeria’s apex Bank. He replaces Sulaiman Barau, from Zaria, Kaduna State, who retired as CBN’s Deputy Governor in December, 2017

Adamu’s appointment was conveyed in a statement issued by Mr Femi Adesina, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity in Abuja on Thursday.

The Presidential aide’s statement said; “In accordance with the provisions of Section 8(1) (2) of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) (Establishment) Act 2007, President Muhammadu Buhari has nominated Mr. Edward Lametek Adamu to the Senate for confirmation as Deputy Governor of the CBN.

“This was contained in a letter dated January 26, 2018 to the Senate President, Bukola Saraki.”

According to the presidential spokesman, “Mr Adamu, from Gombe State, replaces Mr. Sulaiman Barau, from Zaria, Kaduna State, who retired in December, 2017.

“The nominee, who has spent 25 years in the CBN, was appointed in 2012 as Director of Strategy.

“He became Director, Human Resources in 2016, from where he was nominated as Deputy Governor”.

Already, financial commentators are expressing concerns that Mr Adamu’s confirmation by the Senate may suffer the same fate as other appointments submitted to the National Assembly by President Muhammadu Buhari. No thanks to the current face-off between the Presidency and the Senate over Ibrahim Magu’s the continued stay in office as Acting Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), despite his rejection by the Lawmakers.

With the CBN’s statutory Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) failing to hold in January 2018 due to lack of quorum, fears are rife that the apex bank may be worst off as the red chamber looks determined to maintain its tough stance, having earlier resolved to jettison further consideration of all requests from the President until Magu is sacked from office.
