BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – One of the opposition political parties in the country, African Democratic Congress (ADC) has berated the President Muhammadu Buhari All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government for the poor handling the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic in the country.

The ADC specifically said that the social investment programmes introduced by the federal government have no tangible results, adding that the conditional cash transfer, trader moni among others have witnessed cases of graft and irregularities by the implementers.

The party cautioned that if the COVID-19 pandemic escalates beyond what it is at present, it will be so much a catastrophe in view of the poor state of Nigeria’s health sector and what he considered as “the lack of serious measures” to contain the spread of the virus.

The ADC noted that the development has left much to be desired and has not given the country any hope of survival.

It also said that the Federal administration is not doing enough to control the spread of the disease across the country considering what it described as the “lackadaisical” handling of the situation.

The party then cautioned that if the COVID-19 pandemic escalates beyond what it is presently, it will be so much a catastrophe in view of the poor state of Nigeria’s health sector and the seeming lack of serious measures to contain the spread of the virus.

These were contained in a press statement by the National Vice Chairman of the ADC North-East, Manzo Mohammed Ibrahim in which he noted that the novel pandemic has triggered a change in all nations of the world.

Ibrahim lamented that the Nigerian government has not made adequate provision to bring succour to the citizens as they grapple with the deadly virus.

The ADC stated further; “It has become a phenomenal incident that challenges virtually every stratum of human living and Nations. The big question is how prepared is Nigeria as a Nation?”

While reflecting on the present and practicable conditions of health facilities, sanitations, level of poverty, accountable and purposeful leadership that the Nation is experiencing, the ADC stressed that the situation calls for proper and collective assessment aimed at addressing the situations.

According to Ibrahim; “Nigeria’s health facilities are in a near collapse with outdated facilities, inadequate health personnel and poor working environment that need a total attention if they are to serve as health facilities that give healthy attention to citizens.

“This is as a result of the unprecedented negligence of the Health Ministry partly due to inherent corruption and mere attitude to government’s facilities”.

The party however appealed to Nigerians to remain steadfast in prayers for divine intervention in the situation urging them also to be their brothers keepers by sharing in this lockdown period.
