The African Democratic Congress (ADC) coalition in Rivers State has announced what it described as a dramatic surge in its membership following an influx of about 800,000 new members who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the party.
Spokesperson of ADC in the State, Mr Luckyman Egila, who announced this at a press conference in Port Harcourt, said the ADC is “a beautiful bride” that is attracting prominent political figures ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Egila specifically announced that two former governors of the State, Hon Rotimi Amaechi and Sir Celestine Omehia have officially joined the ADC, along with several other influential politicians in the State that include former National Chairman of the PDP, Prince Uche Secondus, former Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Chief Austin Okpara; and former Minister of Transport, Dr. Abiye Sekibo.
He said that the notable political figures have formally dumped their former parties and are now full members of the ADC.
Egila said one can only become a member of the ADC when they have registered with that party and duly issued a membership card, stressing that all the political heavy weights mentioned are now registered members of the ADC.
The Rivers State spokesperson of the ADC, emphasized that the arrival of the high-profile politicians signals a significant political shift in Rivers State.
In the words of Egila; “The ADC is now positioning itself as a major contender for the 2027 elections. The names I have mentioned are all key politicians in Rivers State”.
He said that the wave of defections to the ADC marks the beginning of political realignments in Rivers State politics in recent memory, thereby setting the stage for 2027 to be a fiercely contested electoral season.
