Adekuoroye Ready For Tokyo Olympics, Harvests Gold In Poland
Ahead of this year’s Tokyo 2020 Olympics in Tokyo, Japan, Nigeria’s medal hopeful in the wrestling event, Odunayo Adekuoroye has sent warning signals on her readiness to storm the world stage in a colourful manner.
Evidently showing the global audience what she has in stock for them at Games kicking off next month in the Asian city, Adekuoroye was awesome in harvesting a gold medal in the women’s 57kg at the Poland Open Ranking Series in Warsaw.
Edging out some of the finest wrestlers in the world, the Nigerian sensation carted home the prized gold with her Belarusian opponent, Iryna KURACHKINA backing out of the final bout after sustaining an injury in the semi-final round.
Showing her quality and the stuff she is made of, the Nigeria champion chalked out a shutout 13-0 win over world and Olympic champion American Helen Maroulis in their quarter final match.
Indeed, it was a sweet revenge for Adekuoroye as she adequately made up for her two previous defeats in the hands of the American wrestler
So dominant was Adekuoroye in her performance that she edged past her opponent with about a minute and 32 seconds still remaining in the contest.
Report said that Adekuoroye, who showed no respect for her opponent’s intimidating credentials, dictated the pace as both wrestlers waited for an opening for the first two minutes of the bout.
However, with no opening popping up easily for them, the American wrestler was penalised with a point deduction for passivity in the final round of the match.
