BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI – Cheering news has come for countries participating in this year’s TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) Côte d’Ivoire 2023 with the Confédération Africaine de Football (“CAF”) announcing a 40 percent increase in the Prize Money for the tournament’s winner.
According to the continent’s football governing body, Winners of the TotalEnergies AFCON Côte d’Ivoire 2023 will go home with USD 7,000,000 ($7 million) with the Runner-up expected to pick up USD 4,000,000 ($ 4 million).
Similarly, each of the two semi-finalists will receive USD 2,500,000 ($ 2.5 million) while each of the four quarter-finalists will pocket USD 1,300,000 ($ 1.3 million).
Offering an insight on the latest development, the President of CAF Dr Patrice Motsepe said; “CAF has made significant progress over the past two years in increasing the Prize Money of the AFCON and all its other major competitions.
“We have increased the Prize Money of the AFCON Winner to USD 7 000 000 which is a 40% increase from the previous AFCON Prize Money. I am confident that a portion of the Prize Money will contribute to developing football and also benefit all the football stakeholders, as well as assist our Member Associations with their administrations.”
Meanwhile, the official match schedule for the TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations Cote d’Ivoire 2023 indicates that the 34th edition of the biggest sports event on African soil will take place from 13 January to 11 February 2024 in Abidjan, Yamoussoukro, Bouake, San Pedro, and Korhogo.
The opening game will feature hosts Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea-Bissau on Saturday 13 January 2024 at Alassane Ouattara Olympic Stadium of Ebimpe, in Abidjan with the kick off time as 20h00 local time (GMT)
