AFCON: Super Eagles’ Next Level Act Excites Buhari

BY COBHAM NSA, ABUJA – After watching the Super Eagles display great fighting spirit to dismiss South Africa 2-1 for a semi-final ticket on Wednesday night, President Muhammadu Buhari was all excited congratulating the players for their improved performance and continued progression in the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in Egypt.
He said the victory over the South Africans was well-earned and confirms Nigeria’s deserved move to the Next Level.
The President tasked the players and the team’s technical crew led by Coach Gernot Rohr to remain focused and resolute as they seek their fourth continental title on Egyptian soil.
Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Femi Adesina, said in a statement that; “With a well-deserved victory over the Bafana Bafana of South Africa, President Buhari believes, like millions of other sports-loving Nigerians, that the mission of having the trophy in our hands for the fourth time is almost accomplished for the high flying Eagles.”
The statement quoted the President as urging Coach Rohr and his players to stay focused, disciplined and scale the remaining two hurdles to glory at the continental soccer fiesta.
According to him, the present crop of players in the national football team represented the resilient and indomitable Nigerian spirit, which must be reflected in all other areas of national life.
President Buhari assured the players that Nigerians are praying for them to soar higher and get to the peak of the tournament, knowing that the taste of victory is sweet and what they have achieved so far is pleasing to Nigerians, irrespective of ethnic, religious or political inclination.
Also speaking on the Super Eagles’ brilliant showing at the competition, Delta State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa applauded Nigeria for securing the last four (4) spot at the on-going AFCON championship.
Governor Okowa lauded the Nigerian National side’s resilience, noting that Deltans and Nigerians are fervently praying for the team’s success in its quest to bring home the continental title.
He also praised the coaching crew and the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) for putting all necessary logistics in place to encourage the Super Eagles and ensure their victory over the South African Bafana Bafana.
Governor Okowa, who spoke through his Chief Press Secretary, Charles Aniagwu in Asaba, urged the Eagles to always stay focused and make Nigeria proud when they face their semi-final opponents on Sunday.
The statement by Aniagwu said; “On behalf of the government and people of Delta State, I congratulate you all for your success so far even as i urge you all to remain committed and focused as you approach your next opponent in the semi-final encounter.”
Expressing confidence in the team’s ability to become champions again in Egypt, Okowa said: “I have no doubt in mind that you will all remain committed as you prosecute the next match with same zeal and vigour as Nigerians are desirous to see you return home with the coveted trophy.”
