BY TEMI OHAKWE, ABUJA- The lingering industrial action embarked upon by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), seems far from been over soon.

This followed the decision of the Union on Monday in announcing an extension of the prolong strike by another four weeks.

This was contained in a statement after an emergency meeting of its National Executive Council (NEC) of ASUU which held at Comrade Festus Iyayi National Secretariat, University of Abuja, on Sunday.

The striking public tertiary institutions lecturers, first down tools on February 14, 2022, as a result of the failure of the Federal Government to implement a Memorandum of Action (MoA) entered with ASUU in 2020.

National President of ASUU, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, who announced the decision of members of the Union on Monday, said the painful action to further extend the strike was to enable the Federal Government to satisfactorily resolve all the outstanding issues raised.

The ASUU statement further states; “Following extensive deliberations and taking cognisance of Government’s past failures to abide by its own timelines in addressing issues raised in the 2020 FGN/ASUU Memorandum of Action (MoA), NEC resolved that the strike be rolled over for four weeks to give Government more time to satisfactorily resolve all the outstanding issues.

“The role-over strike action is with effect from 12.01am on Monday, 1st August 2022,” it stated.
