Alleged Treason: Defend Yourself, Sue FG – Supreme Court Tells Nnamdi Kanu
The Supreme Court on Friday rejected an appeal by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu for his release from detention.
This was as the apex court quashed the judgement of the Court of Appeal delivered in October 2022 which ordered the release of Nnamdi Kanu, equally upheld the treasonable charge against him.
The Court of Appeal had also quashed the terrorism charges filed against Kanu by the Federal Government.
Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS), since his re-arrest in 2021 is facing charges of treasonable felony filed against him by the Federal Government.
The Appeal Court on October 13, 2022, discharged Nnamdi Kanu following his extraordinary rendition from Kenya but, the Supreme Court set aside the judgement of the Appeal Court and held that Nnamdi Kanu should continue with his trial.
The Supreme Court however, acknowledged that the bail of Mazi Nnamdi kanu ought not to have been revoked just as it held that the invasion of Nnamdi Kanu’s home by the Nigerian Army on September 14, 2017 was Illegal.
The Supreme Court ruled that Nnamdi Kanu is liable and eligible to stand trial for treason.
