AMOTEKUN: FG, South-West Governors Reach Consensus

BY AMOS DUNIA, ABUJA – The controversy generated over the establishment of Operation Amotekun by the South-west states and the Federal Government with regards to its operational guidelines may have been resolved after all.

This followed a meeting between Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, the South West Governors, the Attorney General of the Federation, Mr. Abubakar Malami and the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Mohammed Adamu.

Simply put, the structure of Amotekun would be operated to align with the Community Policing strategy of the Federal Government.

In the same vein, necessary legal instruments will be put in place by each of the South West States to give legal backing to the initiative with a view to addressing all issues concerning the regulation of the security structure.

A statement from the Office of the Vice President, explained that the meeting was at the instance of the Governors, who had requested for a meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari over the issue that generated unnecessary controversy which the people and governors of the South West considered totally unnecessary and uncalled for.

President Buhari is out of the country for an official engagement directed his deputy to meet with the South West Governors on his behalf.

The statement signed by the Spcial Assistant on Media and Publicity in the office of the Vice President, Mr. Laolu Akande, said the meeting was very fruitful.

Akande said that the meeting arrived at a unanimous resolutions on the way forward.

He said; “Having regard to the need for all hands to be on deck in addressing the security concerns across the country, it was agreed that the structure of Amotekun should also align with the Community Policing strategy of the Federal Government.

“It was also agreed that necessary legal instruments will be put in place by each of the States to give legal backing to the initiative and address all issues concerning the regulation of the security structure.”
