Another Harvest Of Deaths In Zamfara
- Bandits invade communities, 30 feared dead
Another harvest of deaths rocked Askawa and Gidan Dannunu communities of Zurmu Local Government Area in Zamfara state as bandits invaded and reportedly killed no fewer than 30 persons in the attack.
Reports indicated that the bandits stormed the community riding over 80 motorcycles and gunshots rang out sporadically during the unfortunate incident.
In the ensuing confusion, it was gathered that about 30 lives were lost while several other persons sustained various degree of injuries from the bandits’ attack.
Recounting the incident, some eyewitnesses said most community members lost their sheep, cows and goats after the bandits burnt down barns and looted food items.
They said aside chasing the residents away from their homes, the rampaging hoodlums, who kept shooting into the air repeatedly, went after the only functional truck used by the community members and burnt it.
The Nation reported that policemen engaged the bandits but they were reportedly outnumbered in the ensuing gun battle
Another villager claimed to have counted at least 29 corpses and participated in the burial of no fewer than 11 persons after the bandits finally fled the scene.
It was also learnt the head of Kwata community, just returning from the market, was among those reportedly killed.
According to the Zamfara Police Public Relations Officer (PRO), Superintendent Muhammad Shehu said the Force is already investigating the attack.
The Command spokesman promised that an official statement on the incident would be released soon.
In recent times, Zurmi Local Government Area has gained the notoriety of being the worst hit area of bandit attacks in the North-west state of Zamfara. – With the Nation report
