- As Kai Havertz soars high to put Gunners on cusp of long-awaited history
Ordinarily, this match was meant to be a straightforward cruise to victory for Arsenal and a Monday night to bask in the glow of their Premier League title charge. Instead, the Gunners once again descended into a familiar spiral of tension against a reeling Burnley side already relegated since April 22, 2026 and also without Scott Parker at the helm.
The Clarets came to the Emirates Stadium under caretaker Michael Jackson and boasting a miserable stretch of just three draws and zero wins in their last ten matches. However, instead of being easily swept aside by Arsenal, the match saw Coach Mikel Arteta’s men struggling and desperately fighting for their lives.
With terrifying fear and prospect of a calamitous stumble, it was indeed far from pretty for Arsenal. But at the final whistle, the Gunners are just one important game away from the Premier League title as edged past the relegated Burnley, courtesy of Kai Havertz’s towering header from yet another set piece. The German forward rose to meet Bukayo Saka’s corner shortly before half-time, although he was fortunate not be sent off later in the game.

The hard-fought 1-0 victory means Arsenal will be crowned champions if Manchester City drop points at high-flying Bournemouth on Tuesday. From the opening whistle, the match unfolded as a classic battle of attrition with the Clarets immediately digging in, retreating into stiflingly compact low block designed to frustrate and suffocate Arsenal’s title aspirations. Yet, despite Burnley’s stubborn resistance, an Arsenal breakthrough felt like an absolute inevitability.
The pressure nearly paid off just 15 minutes into the contest. Leandro Trossard exchanged a sequence of intricate, fluid passes with Eberechi Eze carving open a rare pocket of space before unleashing a sharp strike that rattled aggressively against the base of the upright. Moments later, the onslaught continued as Bukayo Saka whipped a wicked, curling cross into the penalty area that flashed dangerously across the face of the goal, agonizingly out of reach for the arriving attackers.
Chaos erupted in Burnley’s goal mouth as Saka raced onto Havertz’s low ball across the face of goal. The net seemed to be at his mercy when he suddenly hit the deck. Arsenal’s players were absolutely convinced they had earned a penalty. However, television angles proved it was actually Saka who made contact, kicking Pires’ leg in his shooting motion, and the VAR team saw no reason to overturn the referee’s choice
Arsenal seemed to lose their way in the second period on what became another tetchy occasion at the Emirates. Eze squandered two big openings in the space of two minutes not long after the restart, including a volley that was feathered onto the crossbar.
Havertz was then at the centre of another flashpoint with around 20 minutes to play, although this time for the wrong reason. He escaped a red card despite lunging in on Lesley Ugochukwu and catching him high on the back of his leg as the referee and VAR deemed that it didn’t represent serious foul play.
At the full time whistle, Arsenal survived a tense, chaotic finale to secure a critical victory, keeping their title ambitions alive. This hard-fought result shifts the spotlight entirely to Tuesday’s fixtures. If Manchester City stumbles against Bournemouth, the North Londoners will officially be crowned champions.
However, if the Cityzens win, the ultimate fate of the Premier League trophy will be decided on a dramatic final day, requiring Arsenal to defeat Crystal Palace while City clashes with Aston Villa.
