Assault On Bolt Driver: Rep Ikwechegh To Face Ethics Committee

Honourable Alexander Mascot Ikwechegh, a member of the House of Representatives who recently assaulted a Bolt driver, Mr Stephen Abuwatseya and threatened to make him disappear from Nigeria without trace, has been referred to the House Ethics Committee.

This followed a point of Order moved on Tuesday, October 29, 2024 by the Majority Leader of the House, Hon Julius Ihonvbere which made the House to unanimously moved to refer his matter to the Ethic Committee.

If the Committee find Ikwechegh guilty of conduct that are not in tandem with acceptable behavior, the embattled lawmaker is most likely going to face sanction,

Ikwechegh had on Sunday, October 27, 2024 , assaulted a Bolt driver that went to his residence to deliver a package and later threatened to make him “disappear”.

The Nigeria Police Force on Monday, October 28, invited and interrogated the lawmaker of the assault and his boastful utterances that the Bolt driver can even call the Inspector General of Police.

Following public outcry of the unwarranted assault on the Bolt driver, Hon Ikwechegh issued a statement in which he tendered an apology for his actions and promised to seek professional counsel.

He said; “I Honourable Alex Ikwechegh, Member of the House of Representatives wish to address a deeply disturbing incident that occurred at my residence recently.

“A video has surfaced showing me engaging in unacceptable behaviour towards an Uber driver who came to deliver a waybill for me.

“I am deeply sorry for my actions and acknowledge that they were unacceptable and unbecoming of a public official. As a public servant, I recognise the trust placed in me by my constituents and the Nigerian people.

“My behaviour fell short of the standards expected of me, and for that, I am truly sorry. I understand that my actions have caused harm and embarrassment to the driver, my constituents, and the nation at large.

“I want to assure the public that I am fully cooperating with the Nigerian Police investigation into this matter. I support their efforts to ensure that justice is served and that those responsible are held accountable,” he said.
