Assault On Police Orderly: PSC Demands Critical Review Of SPU Operations
The Police Service Commission (PSC), has declared that the grievous assault on a woman Police orderly, Inspector Teju Moses by her principal, Prof. Zainab Abiola was a direct threat to national security and a calculated attempt to ridicule the Nigeria Police Force (NPF) and what it stands for.
This is as the Commission stressed that with the security problems ravaging the nation, there is an urgent need to free many Police Officers from loitering in private houses and following ‘big men’ around.
It particularly described the brutalization of Inspector Moses by Prof. Abiola and her staff as barbaric and inhuman.
Inspector Moses of the Special Protection Unit of the Nigeria Police was before the incident, attached to Prof Zainab Abiola believed to be a Lawyer and Human Rights Activist.
Inspector Moses was seriously battered by the Prof and her aides for refusing to carry out unlawful orders.
The Commission, in a statement by Ikechukwu Ani, Head of Press and Public Relations, condemned the act and called for an immediate and thorough investigation and prosecution of all characters involved in the show of shame.
The PSC, therefore, called for a critical review of the operations of the Special Protection Unit SPU, to ensure that only a few Nigerians who genuinely deserve such protection are availed of the service.
The Commission particularly frowned at the abuse of Police Orderlies by Nigerians who now use them as status symbols or convert them to house helps who clean, cook, or do menial jobs.
The Commission also called on the Police hierarchy to quickly put a stop to this practice and concentrate its efforts on policing and protecting a greater number of vulnerable Nigerians.
