The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) given the Federal Government one-week window within which to, without further delay, release the N22.27 billion earned allowance of members of the Union.

ASUU said that was the only way to avert another indefinite strike when its three-week ultimatum expired.

The President of the union, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke, gave the warning in an interview with Nigerian Tribune, saying the three-week ultimatum remained only one week.

Osodeke said that should the government fail to honour its own agreement at the expiration of the one week, members of ASUU would be left with no other option than to take the next action.

He said that it was surprising that ASUU has not heard anything from the Federal Government concerning the release of the money despite all the promises just as it has not officially communicated to the Union over the matter.

ASUU at different fora in the last few months and, particularly after the expiration of its August deadline, had been sensitising the public about its lingering contentious issues with the Federal Government threatening to embark on strike should the Federal Government continue to refuse to honour the last agreement it reached with the union in December 2020.

The agreement borders on the provision of funds for the revitalisation of dilapidating infrastructure that include hostel accommodation, befitting lecture theatres, state-of-the-art laboratories, good working environment for lecturers, payment of Earned Academic Allowances (EAA), arresting the trend of proliferation of state-owned universities while neglecting the funding of the existing ones, among others.
