ASUU Strike: Uni-Abuja Vice Chancellor Tasks Government On University Funding

BY TEMI OHAKWE, ABUJA – The Vice Chancellor of the University of Abuja, Professor Na’Allah has said that the Federal Government is making a mistake by not supporting university education as it ought to be.

Prof Na’Allah, who stated this while reacting to some of the issues that prompted the ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, illustrated his position with the Japanese and the Chinese governments, saying that they emerged world economies through their investments in university education.

In his words; “No nation that wants to stand strong will not fund its university system. Look at China, Japan are becoming big economies simply because of effective management of resources. We must contribute our own quota to the development of our own universities”.

On Revitalisation fund, Prof Na’Allah disclosed that the University of Abuja has received N390millions and N540millions as two tranches so far.

However, in spite of the on-going strike by members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Prof. Na’Allah expressed his determination to hold the University of Abuja 25th and 26th, (which are graduands of Years 2020 and 2021 respectfully) Convocation ceremony.

The Vice Chancellor said that the University of Abuja is combining two sets of which is a total number of 8769 students, adding that in the 25th convocation set, 23 students earned first class, 1052 made second class upper grades, 3061 got second class lower while 324 students made third class.

For the 26th convocation set, he said that 31 students earned first class, 973 second class upper division, 2920 made second class lower while 257 students made third class.

He also said that the university is clearing a backlog of 2929 Center for Distance Learning students.

Prof. Na’Allah stressed that the goal of the university is to compete globally as a world class university while also ensuring that students are satisfied with quality of education services in the university.

Speaking on the challenge of securing the university community, the Vice chancellor said that the University of Abuja has activated its ability to care for its land, saying that very soon the university will complete the fencing of its perimeters.
