Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has resigned from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), attributing his decision to the ailing party’s trajectory.

With his resignation, Atiku has further reconfirmed his commitment to the Coalition African Democratic Party (ADC) targeted at dislodging President Bola Tinubu from power in 2027.

In the letter of resignation dated July 14, 2025 and addressed to the PDP Ward Chairman, Jada Local Government Area of Adamawa State, Atiku said the decision to dump the ailing opposition PDP was based on the “trajectory” it has taken, which is completely diverged from the foundational principles which the founders of the party stood for.

The former Vice President, who is currently a key member of the opposition coalition ADC, expressed his profound gratitude for the opportunities given to him by the PDP to serve two full terms as Vice President and being a Presidential candidate twice which were significant chapters of his life.

Atiku’s letter further stated; “However, I find it necessary to part ways due to the current trajectory the Party has taken, which I believe diverges from the foundational principles we stood for.

“It is with a heavy heart that I resign, recognizing the irreconcilable differences that have emerged.

“I wish the Party and its leadership all the best in the future. Thank you once again for the opportunities and support.

“As a founding father of this esteemed Party, it is indeed heartbreaking for me to make this decision,” it stated.
