The Vice Chancellor of Federal University Dutsinma (FUDMA), Katsina State, Professor Armaya’u Bichi, has pointed accusing fingers at some of the university’s staff, alleging that they are informants to bandits and other criminal groups.
Speaking with journalists on Tuesday, Prof Bichi said the contacts of suspected staff have been forwarded to relevant security agencies for further investigation.
The Vice Chancellor lamented that despite the school management’s efforts at putting in place security measures to prevent the recurrence of such banditry attacks, the situation seems to be getting worse.
According to him; “This issue of informants is worrisome, therefore, we investigated those we are suspecting of giving out their colleagues and students’ information.
”We have found them, and handed over their contacts to one of the security agencies for further investigation.
“But we have not heard anything from the security agencies. These suspects are our staff. We have strong reasons for accusing them of being informants to bandits”.
However, the Vice Chancellor expressed the hope that the relevant security agencies would act fast to deal with the suspected bad eggs within the University community.
When contacted, the Police Command in Katsina State said such report is yet to officially come to its knowledge but there was assurance that adequate investigation would be conducted into the matter.
Specifically, the Command’s Public Relations Officer (PRO), ASP Abubakar Sadiq-Aliyu urged members of the public to always assist the Police with information that would end the security disturbing challenges across the State.
Going by available reports, banditry attacks have become frequent around the University community, with the kidnapping students and staff as well as their family members.
It is also on record that about a week ago, some bandits invaded the residence of Dr Tiri Gyan David, Head of the Department of Agricultural Economics, Extension, and Rural Development of FUMA, killing him and abducting his children in the process.
The unfortunate death of Dr David prompted his colleagues to stage a peaceful protest over insecurity within the university community.
