Bauchi Assembly: APC May Lose More Members To PDP
- House leader, Aliyu, says he remains an APC member
BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – There are strong indications that some members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly on the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) will be joining the Speaker, Hon. Abubakar Y. Sulaiman to defect to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in a few days’ time.
Speaker Sulaiman dumped the APC which is the majority party in the House for the PDP.
However, the Majority leader of the Assembly, Hon. Tijjani Mohammed Aliyu, has dissociated himself from those planning to defect to the PDP, saying that the speculation that he was consulting to defect to the PDP is far from the truth.
Aliyu, who represents Azare/Madangala in the Assembly, stated this while reacting to stories in the media, saying that he is a true party man and has no intention of leaving the APC.
He said; “I’m a true party man (APC) and I am not consulting anyone. People that are close to me know me better. I’m categorically debunking this story by the press because there is no iota of truth in it.
“I am not a coward and I am old enough to make any decision without being economical with morality and truth. If I am consulting, I will be bold enough to say it because it’s my prerogative and within my right. I laugh in Spanish,” he said.
Aliyu’s reaction followed the defection of Speaker Sulaiman on Saturday night, which he announced during the breaking of the Ramadan fast at the Government House, Bauchi, with Governor Bala Mohammed and other PDP stakeholders.
About three years after his emergence, Speaker Sulaiman said his decision to pitch tents with the PDP was due to his good understanding and working relationship with Governor Bala Mohammed.
He promised to work together in the best interest of the state, saying; “one of my reasons for joining the PDP is in recognition of the exemplary leadership style of our Governor and his commitment to transforming the state”.
