Bauchi Attempted Jailbreak: Five Inmates, Two Personnel Sustain Gunshots Injuries
BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BUCHI – Five inmates and two staff of Bauchi Central Custodian Center on Friday sustained injuries from gun shots by armed personnel attached to the Nigeria Correctional Service, Bauchi.
The injured officers averted what would have been another jail break few days after the Owerri incident.
They are presently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital in Bauchi metropolis after an attempted jail break failed on Friday.
The Public Relations Officer of the Correctional Service, Bauchi Command, Abubakar Algwallary, who confirmed the development to our correspondent, however said that the situation has been put under control as all the inmates have been put back into their respective cells.
Algwallary said; “Yes, there was a little problem in the Custodian Center today. We were just coming from there with the Command Controller. We have gone to see the situation and I can tell you that everything has been brought back to normal”.
On the cause of the chaos, the PRO said that, “it was discovered that one of the staff was smuggling prohibited substances into the Center for the inmates, he was caught and tried by the authorities. Some of the inmates who were getting the items felt bad and decided to protest the action of the NCS.
“Also, we have some inmates from the Southern part of the country who were aware of the happenings in Owerri so, they teamed up with those protesting the stoppage of the supply and attempted to do a jail break”.
Also speaking on the incident, the spokesman of the Bauchi State Police Command, SP Ahmed Wakili, while confirming the attempt, however said that normalcy has been restored, adding that the center as well as the entire in presently under control.
Wakili further said that in order to strengthen the security situation, a reinforcement of armed personnel has been deployed to the area to keep sentry, warning that any further attempt will be repelled by the security operatives.
