Bauchi Governor To Conference Of Speakers: Initiate Knowledge Driven Policies

BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – Governor Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State has enjoined the Conference of Speakers of Legislative Assemblies of Nigeria to initiate knowledge driven policies for better delivery as against focusing only on passage of budget and other executive bills.

The Governor also urged the Speakers of Legislative Houses to be driven by technology for effective legislative proceedings in line with international best practices.

Mohammed, who gave the advice when he hosted principal officers and members of the Conference of Nigerian Speakers to a State Banquet and Gala Night at Government House, Bauchi at the end of their meeting in Bauchi, noted that members of the Conference are so important in the Nigeria project particularly in ensuring good governance.

He emphasized the need for collaboration and working relationship between the Nigerian Governors’ Forum and the Conference of Nigerian Speakers to enable them contribute positively towards addressing the numerous challenges facing the country.

According to Mohammed; “Our politics in Bauchi is different with others because despite our party differences in the Bauchi State House of Assembly, I am very proud to inform you that I have enjoyed their tremendous support and that is why we have been able to achieved successes”.

On the ongoing strike by the members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), Governor Mohammed pleaded with the striking workers to consider immediate suspension of the strike as their agitation for legislative autonomy is currently at a high level of discussion with critical stakeholders including governors and the presidency.

He further said; “No need for the workers of the Houses of Assembly to go on strike because of the autonomy. I want them to give the Speakers the benefit of doubt by coming back to work, because what they are agitating for is on the table and been discussed at high level”.

Speakers of Delta, Enugu and Kogi States Houses of Assembly in their separate goodwill messages, applauded Governor Bala Mohammed for his good synergy and understanding with the State Assembly despite political differences.

On the ongoing developmental projects embarked upon by the governor, the Speakers commended his transformational agenda and appealed to him to continue focusing on the execution of people-oriented projects.

The chairman of the Conference, who is also the Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, Hon. Abubakar Y Suleiman acknowledged the support of Governor Mohammed to the forum, also appreciated his support, commitment and synergy with members of the Bauchi State House of Assembly.

Suleiman assured that the Assembly will continue to be supportive of the administration in ensuring that people of the state get the best of dividends of democracy irrespective of the political party.

He said; “Though, we were voted on political parties line, the expectations of the people is good governance and effective service delivery. We have to synergize and work together in order to move the state forward positively leaving behind our political party affiliation till the time of politicking”.
