Bauchi State Receives 190 Repatriated Almajiri Pupils From Plateau State

BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – Bauchi State Government on Sunday received 190 Almajiri pupils repatriated from Mangu Local Government Area of Plateau State based on the decision of the 19 Northern States Governors to eradicate the age long almajiri system in the region.

Deputy Governor of the State, Senator Baba Tela, who received the pupils at the General Hassan Usman Katsina Unity College, Bauchi, said the pupils will undergo medical screening and other necessary investigations before they will be handed over to their respective families.

Tela, who is also the Chairman of the Rapid Response Task Force on COVID-19 and Lassa Fever in the State, said that accommodation has been made available for the Almajiri who are mostly under aged boys pending when they would be declared safe to reunite with their families.

The Deputy Governor also said that the gesture is aimed at ensuring that the boys are not infected with the COVID-19 virus and therefore called on Islamic Clerics in the state to comply with the government directive on the ban on Almajiri activities in the state.

Tela said; “We have just received 190 Almajiris, who are indigene of our state. What we intend to do is to verify their health condition to ensure they are not infected with the deadly Coronavirus before we release them to their parents.

“This shows that the policy of Almajiri will be enforced as all the Northern Governors have agreed on banning Almajiri activities in their respective states”.

The Deputy Governor then directed all Ulamas, who have Almajiri with them to with immediate effect, return them to their respective states, assuring that the state government will take care of their transportation.

He further said; “From tomorrow, Bauchi state government will commence the evacuation of all Almajiri pupils to their various states of origin.”

On the level of compliance with the partial lockdown of the state, the Deputy Governor said that a Magistrate Court will be set up to ensure adherence to the order.

Tela explained that the decision is to ensure compliance with the protocol of social distancing as part of efforts to prevent the spread of the novel coronavirus in the state.
