Benue: Herdsmen Attack IDPs’ Camp, Kill Seven Persons

BY OSBERT TOR-NAJIME, MAKURDI – Reports just reaching our news desk from Benue State indicate that while the Monday abduction of some students of Federal University, Makurdi is yet to calm down, there is yet another deadly attack at an Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camp situated in Makurdi Local Government Area during which seven persons were killed.

The deadly attack at the IDPs’ camp believed to have been carried out by armed Fulani herdsmen, also left many people injured at Abagena community, in Makurdi Local Government Area of the state.

This is as Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State said that if the Federal Government had taken the issue of militia herders seriously, deadly attacks wouldn’t have escalated to the level it has now attained.

Forefront correspondent reports that some youths that are enraged and angry over the unfortunate incident have blocked the Makurdi-Lafia highway with the dead bodies as they protest against the Tuesday attack which they described as unwarranted and totally uncalled for.

In his reaction, Governor Ortom described the attack on the IDPs’ camp as inhuman, callous, barbaric and unacceptable.

Ortom therefore called on President Muhammadu Buhari to live up to his responsibility of protecting Nigerians, adding that in the last two weeks, over 70n persons have been killed in Makurdi Local Government alone.

The governor also said that various communities across the state are suffering from the atrocities of the same militia herdsmen and therefore called for urgent action against the activities of militia herdsmen across the country.
