Benue: Herdsmen Kill 4 Policemen, 11 Missing

Suspected armed herdsmen on Sunday night in Logo Local Government Area of Benue State laid an ambush for men of the Nigeria Police deployed for peacekeeping, killing four of them, while 11 are still missing.

Sources said the slain policemen met their waterloo when the deadly herdsmen laid an ambush on them as they were moving from Anyibe to Ayilamo at 7pm for their routine assignment.

According to local residents, a police officer, who escaped with gunshots,  had retreated to inform his colleagues which led to a swift response by the police, who were caught unawares by the ambush.

A resident from the local government area, who pleaded anonymity, said no fewer than 11 officers were missing in the Sunday night attack.

The chairman of Logo Local Government Council, Mr. Richard Nyajo, said many police officers were massacred during the attack in Tombo village, which comprises Anyibe and Ayilamo after they were entangled by the killer herdsmen.

He said the attack saw massive exodus of local residents, including women and children, who fled their homes for safety.

Police Public Relations officer in the Benue State Command, Moses Yamu, in a statement said, “The command regret to report that its personnel came under attack of insurgents at Anyibe, Logo local government of the state between 1800hrs of Sunday night and early hours of yesterday (Monday).

The police spokesman, who said four casualties had been recorded, noted that the command had reinforced its operations, including the Air Asset of the Police deployed by the Inspector General of Police in pursuit of the murderous gang.
