The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has announced that the operatives of the Nigeria Police Force, have arrested 28 suspects over their alleged role in the killings of over 100 residents of Yelwata in Benue State.
IGP Egbetokun, who announced this at a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, said the police are still pursuing other suspects involved in the massacre.
The police boss said that the arrested suspects will be arraigned in court soon, including the 22 suspects who were arrested in Jos, the capital of Plateau State, over the gruesome murder of nine persons travelling to Quanpan for a wedding.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his visit to Benue State last week Wednesday, directed IGP Egbetokun and other security chiefs to arrest the suspected killers of the Benue residents.
Tinubu had said; “Police IG, I hope your men are on alert to listen to information. How come no arrest has been made? I expect there should be an arrest of those criminals”.
Deadly gunmen, suspected to be herders, had last week attacked the Yelwata community in the Guma Local Government Area of Benue State, leaving many dead and thousands of others displaced.
