In what is obviously a decisive step towards bolstering security in Benue State, Governor Hyacinth Alia a few days ago, launched the State security outfit, named, the Benue State Civil Protection Guard (BSCPG). He also inaugurated a joint security task force aptly named “Operation Anyam Nyor.” This initiative is a clear depiction of the administration’s dedication to tackling insecurity; a menace that has bedeviled the state over the years.
The inauguration ceremony which held at the IBB Square was a well-attended event, indicating the significance of the security initiative. The Governor emphasized the necessity for a robust security framework, highlighting the challenges faced by Benue people due to various forms of violence and criminal activities. The introduction of the BSCPG, equipped with 100 brand new branded Hilux vehicles and 600 motorcycles, aims at reinforcing the operational strength of security forces across the state.
Notable personalities from various states, especially from the northern part of the country, graced the occasion, thus, depicting the collaborative endeavor among the northern governors to address security concerns in the region.
Among the notable attendees were Muhammed Inuwa Yahaya of Gombe State, Hon. Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State, and the Deputy Governor of Kogi State, Joel Salifu, who represented Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo. Inuwa Yahaya, who is the chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum, lauded the initiative, promising unwavering support to Governor Alia’s administration in its quest for peace and security.
He said; “There is no alternative to peace. Governor Alia has started on the right part. This initiative will go a long way to test run the much anticipated state police”.
The presence of royal fathers who graced the event in their numbers also further underscored the sensitivity and seriousness of the occasion.

The Begha U Tiv and Chairman of the Benue State Council of Traditional Rulers, HRM Prof. Iorzua Ortese Ayatse, delivered a heartwarming endorsement of the initiative and expressed enthusiasm about the newfound resolve to security. He particularly noted that it was the first time he witnessed such devotion from a state government.
The royal blessing not only added solemnity of the event, but also glaringly portrayed the grassroots support for the government’s security policies.
Similarly, political endorsement was also conspicuous at the occasion, with the National Chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Alhaji Abdullahi Ganduje and members of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the ruling party were in attendance during which Ganduje pledged the party’s full support for the security programme. This political endorsement is of utmost importance, as it matches the state’s security efforts with national policy and resources, potentially advancing the potency of both BSCPG and Operation Anyam Nyor.
In the same vein, the allocation of the branded vehicles and motorcycles signalled a significant investment in the state’s security infrastructure just as the Governor Alia’s administration acknowledged that meticulous policing requires not only personnel but also the necessary equipment to respond in a timely manner to incidents. The new vehicles, Governor Alia said, will facilitate rapid deployment of security forces, ensuring they can respond to emergencies across diverse terrains within the state.
For years, Benue State has grappled with various security challenges, including violent invasion of communities by armed herders, banditry, and other heinous crimes. The successful implementation of the BSCPG and Operation Anyam Nyor could be a turning point in restoring peace and safety for the agrarian populace.

As suggested by the chairman of the Northern Governors’ Forum at the occasion, Governor Alia’s ambitious security initiative may be a test case for the country.
The efficiency of the BSCPG and its ability to promote a sense of security among the populace may serve as a model for other states struggling with similar issues. It will also demonstrate how proactive governance can lead to tangible improvements in public safety.
The inauguration of the BSCPG and Anyam Nyor marked an important step toward the fight against insecurity in Benue State, and with the strong political, royal, and community support, Governor Alia has made a loud statement about his commitment to ensuring safety and security for all residents, thereby paving the way for a more peaceful future.
