BY OSBERT TOR-NAJIME, MAKURDI – Former President of the Senate, Dr. Iorchia Ayu has lamented that Benue State has been completely neglected by the federal government for too long.
Ayu wondered if the state is still being considered as part and parcel of the federation given the level of negligence, stressing that the state indeed deserves a better treatment.
The Benue State born Academia turned politician, who stated these at the commissioning of the recently rehabilitated Ahmadu Bello Way, Gboko, Benue State, noted that no federal road in the state is good at the moment and therefore wondered why the federal government would deliberately refused to turn its attention to Benue but would rather prioritize the construction of a railway to Niger Republic, stressing that such is unacceptable.
The former University don maintained that those using the roads were not only Benue indigenes as some of the roads linked other states with the Federal Capital Territory making it even more necessary to be looked into.
He further said; “The federal government has neglected Benue completely and I wonder why they will abandon all the federal roads here to their deplorable nature but choose to construct a rail line to Niger Republic.
“What we are asking for is our right not a privilege because we are also a federating unit in the country Nigeria and we pay our taxes too. We went to Naka two days ago and the road was practically impassable,” he stated.
Ayu therefore called on the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration to as a matter of urgency mobilize contractors to start work immediately even as he decried the low pace of work currently going on the Yandev-Makurdi stretch saying with the level of snail pace, even if given 10 years, the contractor will not complete 10 kilometers of the road.
