Ohaneze Ndigbo, the apex Igbo cultural group is ready to distance itself from the struggle for a sovereign state of Biafra, if what it termed injustice, inequality and discrimination within the Nigerian Socio-political and Economic landscape is squarely addressed.
Speaking in Calabar at a reception in honour of little Favour Egwuonwu after dedication at St. Bernard Catholic Church, the Anambra State President of Ohaneze Ndigbo, Igwe Damian Okeke Ogene told Newsmen that the continuous agitation for a Biafra State is as a result of perceived injustice, discrimination and inequality against the people of the South East region of Nigeria.
In an answer to a question, Igwe Ogene stated that the agitation for a Biafra State is a time bomb that can die a natural death if the factors mentioned above are addressed and the principles of reconstruction, rehabilitation and reconciliation seen to be properly implemented.
As far as the Igbos are concerned the civil war has not ended because the factors that led to it are still feasible within the country, and the Igbos still feel alienated from the scheme of things he stated.
On the call for the release of the chairman of Independent People of Biafra IPOD, chief Daniel Kanu, the Ohaneze Chieftain likened his continuous detention against the ruling of a competent court of jurisdiction that granted him bail as using a sledge hammer to kill a fly. To him, Igbo leaders know how to manage the IPOD leader should he be released to them and advised the Federal Government to learn the virtue of a caring father who after disciplining an erring child, know when to cuddle him, by drawing such a child back to his chest.
He called on Igbos to rally round and support the President General of Ohaneze Ndigbo chief Anyia Nwodo over his bridge building effort across Arewa, Afenifere and Niger Delta people
