BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, GOMBE – Gombe State government is targeting over 2000 victims affected by recent crisis over the Mai Tangale stool in Billiri local government area of the state with relief materials.
The distribution exercise is being handled by a Special Committee constituted by the State Governor, Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya with the mandate to ensure a hitch free and fair sharing of the palliatives to the affected persons.
Addressing newsmen at the materials’ distribution, Committee chairman, who is also the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ibrahim Dasuki Jalo said the figure is captured in its register as those to benefit from the government gesture.
He said the State government is deploying the materials to ease the people’s pains following massive destruction of property and loss of innocent lives over the new Mai Tangale’s appointment.
Jalo said; “His Excellency Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya in his wisdom saw the need to bring succour to the victims of the recent crisis in Billiri through the provision of these relief materials pending the recommendations of the committee earlier set up to assess damages done during the crisis for eventual compensation.”
According to him, the Committee’s terms of reference is however limited to distributing relief materials to ease the victims’ sufferings while compensation for affected individuals will be determined in line with recommendations made by the assessment committee.
“As you can see, the relief materials being distributed to the affected persons include bags of rice, sugar, garri, cartons of indomie noodles and other forms of pasta”, the Commissioner said
Expressing satisfaction with the materials’ distribution so far, Jalo said the items will hopefully alleviate the affected persons’ sufferings and keep them strong in facing life challenges going forward.
He commended stakeholders’ commitment in ensuring the distribution exercise goes on smoothly across all strata.
In a chat with some beneficiaries, they expressed gratitude to Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya’s administration for the kind gesture.
A statement by Ismaila Uba Misilli, Director-General, Press Affairs, Gombe State Government House said the exercise, held at Billiri Township Stadium, was closely supervised by the Committee members; Billiri LG officials; and security personnel.
He said members of the Dasuki Jalo-led committee include; Commissioner for Special Duties, Christopher Abdu Buba Maisheru; Special Adviser to the Governor on Security, Col Sani Adamu Dapsia (Rtd); Chairperson of Billiri Local Government, Margaret Bitrus; and Chairman APC, Billiri local government.
Others are: Director-General/ Coordinator North-east Development Commission (NEDC) in Gombe state, Shehu Yarima Abdullahi; and Mrs Eglah Idris while the Principal Private Secretary to the Governor, Malam Usman Kamara is the Committee’s Secretary.
