Suspected Boko Haram fighters in the early hours of Monday, March 9, 2026, reportedly overrun a military base in Borno State, during which the Commanding officer and several other soldiers were killed in an encounter with security forces.
Local sources revealed that the latest attack took place in Kukawa Local Government following the storming of the military facility from different directions of the town.
Daily Trust report also stated that the insurgents stormed the military facility shortly after midnight.
Another security source said the deadly attackers successfully dislodged troops stationed at the base, set military vehicles ablaze, and made away with weapons and ammunitions
The source further said; “I cannot say much about the casualties, but it is very sad that we also lost the commanding officer here”.
The latest assault comes barely weeks after terrorists targeted the same military base, but were repelled by troops who reportedly killed several of the insurgents during the encounter.
During the failed attack by the insurgents some weeks ago, the troops were commended by members of the community just as the commanding officer in particular received accolades and commendations which trended on social media.
Commenting on the recent attack, the lawmaker representing Kukawa in the Borno State House of Assembly, Hon. Karta Maina Ma’aji Lawan, described the development as most unfortunate.
Lawan expressed sadness that in spite of efforts made, the military camp was eventually overrun by the terrorists.
The incident comes on the heels of another recent assault by terrorists on another military base and an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) camp in Ngoshe, located in Gwoza Local Government Area, where an unspecified number of soldiers and civilians were reportedly killed.
