BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – Breakthrough Action Nigeria (BAN) has challenged media practitioners to initiate innovative approaches to aid the eradication of deadly diseases in the discharge of their statutory responsibilities to society.

Breakthrough Action, a USAID-sponsored international Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO), gave the charge in Calabar during a two-day media review activity to assess media collaborative efforts towards malaria control and prevention in the country.

The Program Officer of Social Behavior Change of Breakthrough Action, Madam Nkoyo Umoh who expressed delight in the current level of media collaboration and partnership in the campaign against malaria control, said realising the organization’s goal of increasing priority behavior against malaria eradication requires innovative and concerted efforts by all stakeholders.

Madam Umoh said BAN’s target is to ensure the media sustains their collaborative efforts in sensitising the public on the importance of sleeping inside the net as one of the precautionary measures towards malaria control.

She said if the advocacy campaign on controlling deadly diseases must yield the expected results, the media should be ready to initiate programmes that are globally acceptable and capable of attracting the attention of school children as part of malaria prevention strategies.

The Program Officer said effective media partnership has become imperative given that children generally find it difficult to explain their state of ill health for necessary treatment.

The two-day event provided an opportunity for participants to collaboratively assess media programs so far generated to enlighten the public on the control and prevention of not just malaria but tuberculosis and Coronavirus pandemic.
