- As Bukayo Saka’s strike gifts Mikel Arteta’s side a night to remember in north London
England International Bukayo Saka scored the only goal of the match as Arsenal reached their first Champions League final in 20 years by defeating Atletico Madrid 1-0 in a tight and tense encounter at the Emirates to progress 2-1 on aggregate.
The semi-final tie had been left perfectly poised after Viktor Gyokeres and Julian Alvarez had exchanged penalties at the Metropolitano last week and there was once again little to choose between two attritional teams in the return clash in north London on Tuesday night.
The Gunners have poured their absolute heart, soul, and tactical intensity into an intensely impressive, high-stakes Champions League campaign to reach this pinnacle. Yet, in the eyes of insightful pundits, this surge is far less about collecting trivial praise or inflated pride for Mikel Arteta’s revitalized squad. It is a calculated, cold-blooded pursuit of maturation, a critical, deliberate step to move beyond merely competing and, instead, position themselves on the brink of profound, historic glory.

On their part, Atletico Madrid once again came up short in the continental competition as the 1-0 loss at the Emirate on Tuesday night meant they succumbed miserably on in the second leg semi-final tie in which they could only muster just two shots on target in north London as their hopes of facing either Bayern Munich or Paris Saint-Germain in Budapest on May 30 went up in smoke.
It always felt as if a mistake might decide the game – and so it proved. With just a minute of normal time remaining at the end of the first half, Jan Oblak spilled a shot from Leandro Trossard at the feet of Saka, leaving Arsenal’s homegrown hero with the simplest of finishes from inside the six-yard area to send the home fans into raptures.
The Spanish side applied some pressure in the second half but their best chance actually came from a William Saliba error. Unfortunately for Coach Diego Simeone, his son Giuliano was unable to find the back of the net after pouncing on a loose header from the Frenchman – despite taking the ball around David Raya.
Also, Antoine Griezmann forced Raya into his first save of the match soon after, while at the other end Viktor Gyokeres put a great opportunity over the bar after finding himself unmarked inside the visitors’ penalty area. Despite throwing on a number of attackers, Atletico couldn’t forge themselves any further opportunities as Arsenal celebrated reaching just their second-ever final in the competition.
With a solid defensive display, Arsenal comfortably saw out the match, leaving them on the precipice of glory and needing only one more victory to secure their a first-ever European Cup triumph
