BY UBON EKANEM, CALABAR – For her selfless efforts at ameliorating the hardship faced by expectant mothers and street children across the State, the Cross River State Women Parliament has given kudos to the wife of the State Governor, Reverend (Mrs) Eyoawan Edet Otu.

In commending Mrs Otu, the Women parliamentarians described her philanthropic and kind gesture as “laudable and unprecedented”, noting that her good works were already speaking in her favour.

The appreciation of Mrs Otu came through a motion by the Leader of the State Women Parliament and member representing Abi State constituency, Rt. Hon. Patricia Ikpai, who highlighted her humanitarian gestures om just a few months in office.

In Ikpai’s motion, the Parliament lauded the provision of anti-natal kits for expectant mothers across the 18 Local Government Areas of the State; relocation of “street children” in Calabar; outreaches to schools, and construction of a modern kitchen at the Calabar Correctional Centre among other people-oriented programmes through Her Excellency’s pet project, ‘Humanity Without Borders‘.

Co-sponsored by six members and supported by several other lawmakers, the Women Parliament said the ‘Humanity Without Borders’ project has been such a lifesaver for women, the girl child, and youths within the short period of four months in office as the mother of Cross Riverians.

According to them, Mrs Otu’s benevolence has succeeded in giving hope to the vulnerable while also reducing crime among school-age children in the State.

In her remarks, Speaker of the Cross River State Women Parliament, Rt. Hon Fiona Kingsley Ekpenyong called Reverend Mrs Eyoawan Otu as ‘God sent’ and a pathfinder for the Cross River State Woman.

In further appreciating her noble attributes, Hon Ekpenyong assured Rev Otu of the Parliament’s unflinching support in driving the lofty goals of positively affecting lives across the State.

She therefore directed that the Clerk, Gertrude Effiom, should appropriately communicate the Cross River State Women Parliament’s position to the Governor’s wife.

Also speaking, Deputy Speaker of the Women Parliament, Hon. Sarah David, representing Obudu, said the Governor’s wife has a heart of gold and is certainly a true mother who should not only be encouraged but also emulated by others.

Reacting to the development, the Cross River Commissioner for Women Affairs, Dr Edema Irom, commended members of the Women’s Parliament for successfully holding their inaugural plenary.

In her goodwill message to the Parliament, Dr Irom charged members to be supportive of all women-related activities in the State as part of their humanitarian and social corporate responsibilities to the electorate.

Meanwhile, the Cross River State Women Parliament’s Speaker, Rt Hon Ekpenyong has inaugurated the Chairmen and members of 12 House Committees, even as she tasked them to be fully acquainted with their oversight responsibilities and also commence work immediately for positive public impact.
