A major fire outbreak occurred at the High Commission of Canada in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city on Monday with at least two people feared dead, and one person critically injured in the incident.

According to eyewitnesses, parts of the building, situated at 13010G, Palm Close, Diplomatic Drive, Central Business District (CBD) in the nation’s capital, were affected in the incident which occurred while the Embassy’s power generating plant was being repaired and serviced.

It was gathered that the fire outbreak caused the death of two persons while one person was critically injured and another one escaped through the roof of the power house.

Insiders hinted that the victims were part of the technical crew attending to the generating set when the incident occurred, adding that the dead victims were blown out of the powerhouse due to the force of the sudden explosion from the generating set.

With the Embassy still expected to make an official statement about the incident, the staff had to be immediately evacuated from the building, while those who were quick to run of the High Commission’s gates, said the fire started at about 12 p.m

Though details of the incident were still sketchy, the Head of Operations of the FCT Fire Service, Amiola Adebayo, said no fewer than three other victims were rushed to the hospital, adding that; “We have two fatally injured and the others in the hospital, either three or four.”

However, Adebayo could not confirm whether the affected victims were foreigners or Nigerian citizens.
