With hopes of defending their Premiership League title all gone this season, Champions, Manchester City on Sunday claimed their third successive Carabao Cup title.

The Pep Guardiola men were inspiring, especially in the opening 30 minutes to beat Aston Villa 2-1 and retain the trophy at the Wembley Stadium.

This victory means the blue side of Manchester have now captured the Carabao Cup for the third season running. It also marks the third season in a row that they are winning the first trophy on offer in the league season.

Kicking off proceedings on a bright note, City took the game to Aston Villa right from the first minute and their in-form Argentine striker, Sergio Aguero did not waste time in hitting the target on the night.

Showing why his is the Club’s highest goal scorer ever, Aguero connected sweetly with a header that beat Phil Foden.

Not yet done, the Pep Guardiola’s side made it two soon after with Midfielder Rodrigo rising highest to head home a corner from the left flank

However, it would not have been a Cup final if there was no twist on the night as Aston Villa rallied and pulled one back late in the first half.

With City defender, John Stones slipping outside the box, Aston Villa took full advantage of the error as Anwar El-Ghazi supplied a pin-point cross from the left which Kenyan striker, Mbwana Samatta met with a flying header to reduce the tally.

On resumption of the second half, both sides struggled to find the net for the all-important goal but it was City that created the better chances. The Citizens however survived a scare when Bjorn Engels’ header was turned onto the post by Claudio Bravo late on.

Indeed, Villa were no pushovers as they hit the post late in the second half but failed to save the day as another Carabao Cup, with the name of Manchester City written on it, went back to Etihad Stadium.

The victory is also City’s fourth title in five years and their fifth in seven.

Meanwhile, City’s forward and England international, Raheem Sterling says the Citizens are still aiming to win two more trophies this season after their third straight League Cup title

According to him, Manchester City are “fully focused” on completing a treble this season. Though he concedes there is no hope of overhauling the massive 22-point gap opened by Premier League leaders, Liverpool on the table, Sterling is eyeing more silverware with City in the Champions League and FA Cup competitions.

For now, the prospects are quite high as the reigning Premier League champions hold a 2-1 lead over Real Madrid ahead of their second leg Champions League last-16 tie at Etihad Stadium and travel to Sheffield Wednesday for the fifth round of the FA Cup on Wednesday, March 4, 2020 – With agency reports
