Following an investigation by Daily Nigerian Newspaper Reporter over University certificate racketeering in Benin Republic, the Federal Government of Nigeria on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 suspended the evaluation and accreditation of degree certificates from Benin and Togo Republics.

Daily Nigerian reporter carried out an investigative story in which he bagged degree from Cotonou University in six weeks and proceeded to participate in the National Youth Service Scheme (NYSC).

The Federal Government said its decision to suspend evaluation and accreditation was arrived at pending the outcome of an investigation that would involve the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the two affected countries as well the Department of State Security Services and the National Youths Service Corps.

These were contained in a statement by the Federal Ministry of Education which stated that the suspension came on the heels a recent online publication online detailing how an undercover reporter bagged a degree at a Cotonou university in 6 weeks and participated in the NYSC scheme.

Towards this end, the Federal Government through the Ministry of Education vehemently decried such acts and therefore directed that an internal administrative processes to determine the culpability or otherwise of her staff and carry out appropriate Public Service Rules.

The statement which was signed by Augustina Obilor-Duru on behalf of the Director, Press and Public Relations of the federal Ministry of Education, said that the ministry will continue to review its strategy of blocking any loopholes, processes and procedures.

It also stated that the Ministry has been contending with the problem including illegal institutions located abroad or at home preying on unsuspecting, innocent Nigerians and some desperate Nigerians who deliberately patronize such outlets.

The statement assures Nigerians and the general public of putting in place mechanisms to sanitise the education sector.
