BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI – Though the anguish of missing out of this year’s World Cup tournament still sits deep, Nigerian football fans are giving Super Eagles coach, Eric Chelle kudos for unleashing a thrilling display of grit and swagger despite narrowly losing 1-2 to World Cup-bound Portugal in Wednesday night’s explosive international friendly in Leiria, located in western Central Portugal

The Malian-born Sweat Merchant is earning glowing accolades for his tactical blueprint and transformative ideas that are fast turning into a formidable momentum as he hopes to secure his first major and defining silverware at AFCON 2027 tournament

Many fans see him as having instilled a praiseworthy fighting spirit into the hitherto spineless and underwhelming side while laying the perfect foundation for the Super Eagles to re-enact the glory of their good old days across the continent and beyond.

The defeat notwithstanding, the three-time African champions’ impressive display against one of Europe’s strongest sides has left many supporters encouraged about the future, with football commentators noting that his inputs in turning things around have clearly shown in the tactical structure, pressing intensity, and confidence displayed by the Nigerian team.

Though Portugal had Cristiano Ronaldo, one of the greatest individuals to have played the game, leading the Seleção das Quinas out onto the turf of the Estádio Dr Magalhães Pessoa on Wednesday, the home team and crowd soon realized that the three-time African champions were not in any mood to simply turn up and be dazzled.

After Ronaldo missed with only goalkeeper Maduka Okoye to beat in the 9th minute, and Akor Adams also missed at the other end dragging his shot a little too wide to the left, the stadium came alive in the 23rd minute as Pedro Neto steered Portugal in front, firing a grounder past Keeper Mark Okoye from close range, after a pass by Diogo Dalot.

As Portual broke forward again 10 minutes later, Okoye spectacularly saved a fierce shot by Bruno Fernandes, and a minute after, Ronaldo missed narrowly with a glancing header from Fernandes’ corner.

However, Nigeria kept probing and the fit-fight Akor contested an aerial ball close to the centre circle. Tipping the ball away from two Portuguese defenders, he ran to his left to await delivery by Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, and blasted past Diogo Costa for Nigeria’s leveller in the 37th minute.

The second half saw Okoye making a double save from João Félix, in the 48th and 49th minutes, even as five-time Ballon d’Or winner Ronaldo also continued his search for a goal, but failed to connect well from a cross in the 50th minute.

Coach Chelle made a number of changes On the hour, bringing in Abdullahi Bewene, Zaidu Sanusi, Terem Moffi, Raphael Onyedika and Frank Onyeka. This appeared to rejuvenate Nigeria’s game, and they were once more pushing forward with elan, as Ronaldo exited in the 65th minute without the goal he wanted so much.

But with 15 minutes left, Francisco Çonceicao got the winner for Portugal, firing home after cutting in from the right and with Okoye’s sight somewhat impaired. Félix’s efforts to get on the scoresheet was again scuttled in the 84th minute by Okoye, who pushed away another fierce delivery by the dashing forward.

This loss is only the second in regulation time for Coach Chelle after leading the Super Eagles in 25 matches over the past 15 months. Full of praise for his transformative impact on the team since his appointment, pundits and fans celebrating him readily cite the elite tactical flexibility, calm leadership style, and the squad’s impressive streak under his watch as Head coach.

The consensus is around what they considered a new tactical identity in terms of strategic vision that shifts the team from an over-reliance on individual brilliance to a structured, and fluid unit

Writing with the name Ken (@K3N3_X) June 10, 2026, one of the fans said: “Omo, what has Eric Chelle done to this team? Dunno if I’ve ever seen The Super Eagles play this well against European teams like we’ve done against Poland and Portugal🔥”

Another fan,  leumas (@eggsam59) June 10, 2026, also chipped in: “Omo Nigeria ball ooooo. I just dey happy for this Eric Chelle”

The gaffer has also earned international respect with opposition managers, including Portugal head coach, Roberto Martinez, commending his tactical ideas as well as physical threat the Super Eagles squad poses to any opposition.
