CIBN Mulls Over Nigeria’s Quest For Rapid Economic Growth, Development

BY CHINYERE OBIORA – Ahead of the 17th edition of its Annual Nigeria Banking and Finance Conference slated for September 2024, the Chartered Institute of Bankers in Nigeria (CIBN) says Nigeria’s quest for accelerated economic growth and development will top the agenda of discourse
The flagship conference will bring together stakeholders, policymakers, regulators, analysts, political officeholders, banking industry leaders, and the academic community to brainstorm on the economy and set an agenda for its sustainable development.
Addressing a pre-conference briefing in Lagos, CIBN’s President, Professor Pius Olarenwaju (FCIB), said the conference, slated for September 10th and 11th September 2024 in Abuja, is part of the institute’s Capacity Building mandates.
He explained that this involves equipping banking professionals with the requisite knowledge and skills to navigate the ever-changing Banking and finance landscape.
Prof Olarenwaju further stated that the annual conference also presents a platform to share experiences and exchange ideas on contemporary issues affecting the banking sector and the economy.
He said President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is expected as the Special Guest of Honour, while other distinguished African leaders will also grace the event with the theme; “Accelerated Economic Growth and Development: The State of Play and Way Forward”.
Also offering further insight about the event that will attract over 12,000 banking and finance professionals worldwide, Chairman of the Conference Consultative Committee and the Group Chief Executive Officer of United Bank for Africa (UBA), Mr Oliver Alawuba, said the hybrid event will feature a goodwill message by the Governor of the Central Bank, Mr. Olayemi Cardoso.
According to Alawuba, there will also be intellectually engaging sessions to address critical challenges within Nigeria’s business and financial sectors while integrating the voices of the Next Generation.
The CIBN serves as the professional body for bankers in Nigeria. Originally established as the Nigerian Institute of Bankers in 1976, it received its charter in 1990 and is currently governed by the CIBN Act 5 of 2007.
The institute is responsible for regulating the banking profession, establishing standards for bankers, and maintaining professional ethics through implementing sanctions against its members.
